The Athens City School's Health and Wellness Team is getting ready to review our Wellness Policy. The Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 demanded that schools across the nation receiving money for their school lunch program, develop a Wellness Policy with input from parents. The main focus of the policy was to improve nutrition and physical activity.
A number of changes have happened since we first developed our policy:
- We purchased a nutritional analysis system that graded all foods as Red, Yellow or Green. Red items: higher in fat, sugar or salt, Yellow items: OK in moderation, and Green: you guessed it-eat as much of them as you want! All red items were removed from the cafeteria program several years ago.
- All pop was removed from school cafeterias ( this was done prior to to 2004)
- Cereal sugar content must be below 12gms per serving size.
- Milk served is either 1% fat or skim
- Fresh salad available everyday
- Fresh fruit available everyday
Recently the federal government renewed the nutrition program, renamed as the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act with the goal of improving school meals. In preparation for possible changes we would like your feedback.
Below we have a link to a survey that will take less time than it took to read this message! Please take 30 seconds to fill out the survey. If you would be interested on being on a committee to update our Wellness Policy, you can also reply to this email as such. Thanks!
