NOTICE TO PARENTS
On May 29, 2012, the United States Department of Education (USDoE) granted the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) a waiver of several provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). Under Title I, Part A of NCLB, districts were required to notify parents if any of their schools or the district itself were identified for Improvement. Ohio school districts are no longer are required to send a letter out to notify parents of School or District Improvement status.
Other Changes in Requirements:
Under Title I, Part A of NCLB, districts were required to offer Public School Choice and Supplemental Educational Services. Ohio school districts are no longer required to offer these options.
In place of these provisions, however, Athens City School District has utilized some of its required Title I set-aside funds to provide new services as well as to continue some others from the District’s Continuous Improvement Plan. At The Plains Elementary School, the District now has in place instructional coordinators for both literacy and mathematics in order to provide both more intervention and more effective intervention for at risk and less-than-proficient students. Additionally, the school still continues to provide two intervention specialists for these students. At Athens Middle School, a new position has been created to provide less-than-proficient students with extra instructional time to help accelerate their academic growth and reach proficiency and beyond.
