The Athens Middle School Power of the Pen team competed in Chillicothe at the Regional Tournament on Saturday, March 31. Power of the Pen is a statewide organization and competition for young, creative writers. It gives students the opportunity to compete against other student writers in the state while developing writing skills.
The 7th grade team, made up of Laurel Bayless, Derek Demel, Emily Mather, Sophie Mather, and Mia Radhiya, placed 2nd out of twenty teams. The following students earned individual awards based on their three stories written that day: Emily Mather 4th place and Mia Radhiya 10th place.
The 8th grade team was made up of Grace Cahill, Richard Hwang, Delaney Murray and Sue Ryu. Earning individual awards were Delaney Murray 1st place, Grace Cahill 5th place and Richard Hwang 8th place. Richard Hwang also earned “Best of the Best” award for his story written at the District Tournament. Delaney Murray won 3 “Best of Round” awards for her first-ranked stories in all three rounds!
As a group, Athens Middle School Power of the Pen team won the Regional Sweepstakes trophy. Accompanying the team were Coach Dana Dieterle and guest judge, John Barrington.
